Bishop Gene Robinson, whose consecration as an Episcopal Church bishop in 2003 ignited a furor within the denomination because he’s openly gay, announced recently he’ll be stepping down from his position.

But not before, apparently, he talks frankly about gays and the church. In this YouTube video, Robinson is motivated to speak due to the gay suicides in September and October that made national headlines.

He especially takes Roman Catholics, Mormons and Southern Baptists to task for their anti-gay rhetoric.

“I want to tell you as a religious person,” Robinson says on the video, “that they are flat-out wrong. God loves you beyond what you could imagine. God loves you the way you are… . God doesn’t want you to change.”

“Despite what you hear from religious people, God loves you beyond your wildest imagination.”

This criticizing of religious people by Robinson is interesting because most Christians would agree that God loves gays. But obviously, the rhetoric from churches is not conveying that to gays. What is being conveyed is judgment and rejection.

Perhaps churches opposed to homosexuality need to re-think their approach on the issue. The current approach seems to be falling flat.
