It’s sometimes asked why I cover “the gay issue” regularly on this blog. Below are my reasons.
1. The gay issue is the biggest controversy within Christianity today. It has already torn apart numerous denominations, such as The Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
2. The gay issue has created a debate about the literal truth of the Bible and its interpretations.
3. The gay issue links religion, politics and science in ways that inform public policy, national elections and the lives of Americans.
4. For many people, the gay issue has set science (as, for example, in the American Psychological Association reports) and religion at odds with each other.
5. At least two groups on SPLC’s Hate Group list, American Family Association and the Family Research Council, have ties to Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs. For faith-based groups to be on a Hate Group list is not only ironic; it is emblematic of how polarizing the gay issue is in American society.
